KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dismissed today’s meeting of “progressive” MPs as unnecessary, saying the gathering organised by the opposition to discuss allegations in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) against the prime minister would only create political instability.

According to an article on the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club’s (BNBBC) website, the Umno vice-president also reportedly expressed confidence that all BN MPs would continue to stand by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, despite the many controversies surrounding the latter’s leadership.
“In a legal sense, there is basis to call (the meeting) but to me, there is no need to do so,” he was quoted telling BNBBC yesterday.
Zahid also commented on the current state of the Pakatan Rakyat federal opposition pact, which is expected to reorganise its forces after Hari Raya, saying he believes the loose alliance may not survive even a reboot.
“This is an attempt that will end in destruction,” he was quoted saying.
The bipartisan meeting for federal lawmakers scheduled to take place in Parliament this afternoon was forced to move after attendees were told that the intended venue was booked by the Youth and Sports Ministry’s Perdana Fellows.
According to PKR communications chief Fahmi Fadzil, however, the briefing room that was allegedly booked was found to be empty and locked.
The federal lawmakers and activists are now holding the emergency meeting at a parade site next to the main Parliament building, with photos showing them sitting on the floor.
The ostensibly bipartisan meeting of “progressive” MP was organised by DAP’s Lim Kit Siang and PKR’s Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to discuss Malaysia’ s future as a result of a WSJ article accusing the prime minister of receiving US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) from 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
